Road of Remembrance Rock

Members of the Mahoning Chapter NSDAR gathered with elected officials, veterans, and community members at noon on July 9, 2016, for a rededication ceremony for the Memorial Road of Remembrance Rock on Newport Drive in Boardman.

The Road of Remembrance and surrounding rocks were first brought to the Mahoning Valley 85 years ago from the battlefields at Lexington and Concord and were placed in the care of the Mahoning Chapter. The memorial was originally dedicated in 1931 by the chapter to honor veterans, soldiers, and those who have fallen in all wars. Veterans, under the leadership of Leo H. Connelly, commander of Department of Ohio Disabled American Veterans District 7, participated in the ceremony. An honor guard presented the colors and conducted a 21-gun salute.

Remarks and citations were presented by Ohio Senator Joe Schiavoni, the Mahoning County Commissioners, and the Boardman Township Trustees. A representative from United States Congressman Bill Johnson’s office read and presented a proclamation, and United States Senator Rob Portman sent greetings. Kate Lamb, OSDAR Vietnam 50th Anniversary Commemoration chairman, attended and spoke briefly.

Toward the end of the ceremony, Junior Members, Sarah Keeler and Jennifer Phillips, placed a wreath at the rock to commemorate its 85 years in the Mahoning Valley.
