The Road of Remembrance and surrounding rocks were first brought to the Mahoning Valley 85 years ago from the battlefields at Lexington and Concord and were placed in the care of the Mahoning Chapter. The memorial, located on Newport Drive in Boardman, was originally dedicated in 1931 by the chapter to honor veterans, soldiers, and those who have fallen in all wars. A rededication ceremony was held in July 2016 and a wreath was placed at the rock to commemorate its 85 years in the Mahoning Valley.

The historic Old Stagecoach Inn began serving travelers on the old Portage-Columbiana stage road (now Tallmadge Road) in 1832. Two major stage lines passed through Palmyra in the early 1800s. Originally a simple two-story Greek Revival-style building, it had its third story added in 1888. The DAR Mahoning Chapter is proud to be helping with this project.

The American Indian Fund goes beyond the scholarship needs to provide funding for Bacone College, Chemawa Indian School, Indian Youth of America Summer Camp, as well as to provide financial assistance for grants, student needs, and educational programs and opportunities. Our chapter worked to sponsor sending a youth to summer camp.

The Mahoning Chapter of the DAR is honored to take part and welcome newly sworn in American citizens at the courthouse in downtown Youngstown.

During World War I, there was an overwhelming effort to assist those fighting abroad. Before America even joined the war, organizations such as the American Red Cross and the American Fund for the French Wounded had issued pleas for warm clothing for soldiers—or, as a Navy League poster put it, to “Knit a Bit.” Help us continue this tradition for our current service men and women!

There are between 6 and 7 million abandoned veterans’ gravestones in small community and church cemeteries across the country that have been ignored for decades. The Mahoning DAR is helping the movement to clean these grave markers.
